Overview

What is OpenBot?

OpenBot is CopilotKit's MIT-licensed starting point for running AI agents inside your own network. Every agent you register is handed a separate browser session, its own storage and a short list of tools you allow, so it can carry out work instead of only describing it. Anything an agent tries to touch — a website, a file, an MCP server, a piece of interface — passes the same checkpoint, which decides whether the step goes ahead and keeps a record of what happened; that record is what makes it reasonable to give a bot real access. Agents are ordinary AG-UI endpoints, so something built on LangGraph, Mastra, CrewAI, Pydantic AI, Google ADK or written by hand can join without being rewritten. A Compose file brings the stack up against your own PostgreSQL, no model is bundled, and an administrator enters the provider key. Two agents are configured out of the box and ten more single-purpose examples ship alongside, but the project calls itself a template rather than a finished product, so expect to change code.

Good for
  • Internal teams that want agents working with company files and logins without handing that access to a third-party cloud.
  • Developers who would rather start from a codebase they can fork (MIT) and point at their own model account and database.
  • Buyers comparing agent platforms on how tightly each individual action is gated and logged.
Watch out for
  • The project describes itself as a template and badges itself alpha, so plan for code changes and unfinished edges rather than a finished product.
  • One name, several products: this listing is the CopilotKit project at copilotkit.ai/openbot. openbot.org is an Intel robotics effort, openbot.run is a separate desktop app, and openbot.ai is a different company entirely.
  • Open source here covers the licence only. Model usage and hosting stay your cost.
Features

What it does

  1. 01A workspace per agentEach bot runs in its own browser profile with separate logins, its own file area and only the tools you allow for it.
  2. 02One checkpoint, one historyClicks, file writes, MCP calls and interface responses all pass the same checkpoint, which authorises the step and writes it down for later review.
  3. 03Agents from any frameworkBots are AG-UI endpoints, so an agent built on LangGraph, Mastra, CrewAI, Pydantic AI, Google ADK or in plain code joins without being rewritten.
  4. 04Deploys into your own accountA Compose file starts the services, all data lands in your PostgreSQL, and the provider credential an admin enters is stored encrypted and kept out of the logs.
  5. 05A starting roster, not an empty repoTwo agents are configured out of the box and ten more single-purpose examples — expense review, release notes, ticket triage — can be copied in or replaced with your own.
  6. 06Replies made of interfaceA bot answers with components, so a response can arrive as a form, a table or a chart instead of a wall of prose.

FAQ

Questions about OpenBot

What does OpenBot cost?

The repository is MIT-licensed, so nothing has to be bought in order to run it. Your costs are the model provider you connect and whatever you host it on; CopilotKit bills separately only when its engineers build or adapt a deployment with you.

Is there a hosted tier I can sign up for?

No. It is distributed as source you clone and adapt: you replace the example tenant with your own agents, channels and skills, then operate the result yourself.

Do my agents have to be written with CopilotKit?

No. The only requirement is that an agent speaks AG-UI, which puts framework-specific and hand-written agents in the same position.

Where is the real homepage?

copilotkit.ai/openbot is the product page and github.com/CopilotKit/OpenBot holds the code. openbot.org, openbot.run and openbot.ai all belong to unrelated projects.
