Overview

What is magpie?

magpie is a free, MIT-licensed menu-bar app that acts as a model hub for AI coding agents. One panel shows what Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI and other supported agents are running, and a click rewires any of them to a different vendor — DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, MiniMax, OpenRouter, Anthropic, Gemini, or a local Ollama server. Behind it, a gateway on localhost speaks the OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini wire protocols, so any compatible client can connect too, while API keys live only inside magpie: agents never see them, and nothing is picked up from shell environment variables. Existing Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot plan sign-ins can power other tools: requests prefer the allowance that resets earliest, drained keys rest, rate-limited accounts pause for the span their Retry-After header names, and a failing account steps down while the request retries elsewhere before the agent notices. An optional intent classifier matches each message to the model that suits it, groups bind several providers under one name with ordered or balanced routing, and usage views break down tokens, cache hits and spend for every agent-model pair. There is also a full TUI and CLI, agent config files are edited surgically with comments and formatting kept, and everything unwinds cleanly when an agent goes back to its own default.

Good for
  • Running several coding agents and wanting each on a different vendor's model without hand-editing configs
  • Reusing a Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot subscription inside other agents and editors
  • Blending cheaper providers such as DeepSeek, Kimi or GLM into Western coding agents
  • Automatic failover across multiple API keys when one hits limits or runs dry
Watch out for
  • The local gateway must be running for routed models; closing the app without the tray icon or daemon installed interrupts agents mid-turn
  • Name collisions abound: this is yetone's magpie at usemagpie.ai — not Blinue/Magpie (a Windows upscaler) and not the magpie-align LLM data-synthesis project
  • Fully local: no hosted relay for teams, and official releases ping home once a day with an anonymous usage summary (random ID, versions, agent/provider counts)
Features

What it does

  1. 01Menu-bar model switcherSee and change each agent's model in one place; only the edited setting in the agent's own config changes, taking effect on the next session
  2. 02Local multi-protocol gatewayAn OpenAI-, Anthropic- and Gemini-compatible endpoint on 127.0.0.1 that any client can use; keys are held by magpie alone
  3. 03Subscription accountsBring Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot sign-ins, spend the allowance that resets first, and keep prompt caches warm on that account
  4. 04Failover and rate-limit handlingErrored accounts back off progressively; limits are honoured per Retry-After; requests move to a healthy account before the first byte returns
  5. 05Intent-based routingA classifier model reads the message and picks the right model — a quick question on a fast one, heavy work on a larger one
  6. 06Routing groupsBind several providers under one model name with ordered or balanced routing; groups can nest other groups
  7. 07Usage and cost trackingTokens, cache hits and spend for every agent-model pair, plus each subscription's consumed allowance and reset time
  8. 08CLI, TUI and clean unwiringEverything works from the terminal with profiles; switching an agent back to default removes magpie's edits and restores prior values

FAQ

Questions about magpie

Is magpie free?

Yes. The app is open source under the MIT licence, with no paid tier; you only pay the model providers whose keys or subscriptions you add.

Does my traffic pass through a magpie server?

No. The gateway runs on your machine and calls each provider directly under that provider's terms; the project's only callback is an anonymous daily usage ping from official builds.

Which agents and clients work with it?

It ships adapters for Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Goose and more, and any OpenAI- or Anthropic-compatible client can point at the local gateway.

How do I undo the changes it makes?

Pick the agent's own model or run its default command; magpie deletes only the entries it wrote and restores the values it replaced.
